High potential and gifted education (HPGE)

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with  HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Miranda North Public School, we provide enriching and challenging learning experiences within every classroom to help all students reach their potential.
Our teachers use differentiation and evidence-based strategies to extend and engage high potential learners. Students are encouraged to think deeply, collaborate, and take ownership of their learning.

Examples include:

  • Differentiated learning tasks across all key learning areas
  • Maths Olympiad and enrichment investigations
  • Coding and Minecraft Education for digital innovation
  • Inquiry-based learning and project-based challenges
  • Opportunities for creative writing, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
Across our school

Across Miranda North PS, we provide diverse opportunities for students to develop their talents and strengths across the four HPGE domains — Intellectual, Creative, Social–Emotional, and Physical.

Programs and initiatives include:

  • Creative Arts: Dance groups, Southern Stars, Drama Group, Band, Drumming Troupe, Junior and Senior Choirs, and Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival Art Competitions
  • Social–Emotional Development: Grow Your Mind, Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), SRC, and a wide range of student leadership opportunities
  • Community Connections: Partnerships with local preschools and nursing homes fostering empathy and belonging
  • Physical Development: PSSA, gala days, athletics, and carnivals, with many students representing the school at zone, regional, state, and national levels.
Across NSW

Our high potential and gifted learners have the opportunity to represent Miranda North PS and connect with students across New South Wales through a variety of programs and competitions, including:

  • Premier’s Reading Challenge
  • Public Speaking and competitions
  • Premier’s Sporting Challenge
  • Performing Arts Festivals such as Sutherland Shire Music Festival and Southern Stars Arena Spectacular
  • STEM and Digital Learning initiatives supported by the NSW Department of Education.
